The University of North Texas in Denton has upgraded its media arts curriculum by integrating Sony professional camera technology to better prepare students for industry careers. According to a report from AVNetwork, the university now provides undergraduate and graduate learners access to the FX6 cinema camera and the HXR-NX800 handheld camcorder for real-world narrative and documentary projects.
AVNetwork states that the department collaborated with Texas Film Gear to select specific models for different skill levels. The NX800, featuring 4K resolution and AI-powered subject recognition, serves introductory courses, while the full-frame FX6 supports intermediate and graduate studies. Brandon Gaesser, an assistant professor and interim production committee chair, told AVNetwork that the goal was to replace aging equipment with tools matching current professional standards without requiring extra accessories.
Gaesser explained to AVNetwork that choosing Sony helps students transition smoothly into entry-level roles because the brand is widely used by working professionals. He noted that the user-friendly design allows students to quickly build muscle memory across the product lineup. AVNetwork reports that MFA students standardized on the FX6 have assisted in teaching undergraduates how to operate the NX800. Gaesser added that the cameras handle dynamic lighting well, resulting in substantially increased work quality and improved employability for graduates.
