A new firmware option, called FoMni, is now accessible for the M-VAVE FM-1 synthesizer, according to Synthtopia. This free and open-source software provides a unique performance approach inspired by the Suzuki Omnichord.
FoMni enables users to select a chord using the black keys on the synthesizer's keyboard, and then create a musical sequence by sliding a finger across the white keys. The firmware’s design incorporates a variety of sounds, including an organ-like chord voicing, a bass line, and ten different rhythms originally found in the OM-84 instrument.
Notably, FoMni synchronizes the bass and chord elements to maintain a consistent tempo. While the FM-1 is not an officially open hardware platform, developers have been able to reverse-engineer its design, allowing for the creation of custom firmware. FoMni represents one of approximately a dozen available firmware options, each expanding the FM-1's sonic and performance possibilities.
