Guitar Center's Drum-Off competition has returned following a decade-long break, staging its finals at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, according to Music Connection. Six drummers from across the United States competed for the title.
Each contestant opened by playing a one-minute groove alongside a house band that included Robert Trujillo on bass, then followed with a four-minute drum solo. The judging panel of Tré Cool, Jay Weinberg and Josh Freese evaluated stage presence, technique, dynamics and overall performance. Stephen Perkins and comedian Bill Burr hosted the evening.
The event also featured live sets beyond the competition itself. Rival Sons performed original material along with a Black Sabbath cover, while Michael Anthony, Phil X and Kenny Aronoff teamed up to play Van Halen hits.
Jonathan Fortson of Hamilton, Alabama, was crowned the winner, collecting $25,000 along with drum sponsorships and gear packages. He closed out the night with a final drum solo.
