The Hollywood Philharmonic, a recording-focused orchestra, launched in Los Angeles with an event at Capitol Records, according to Mixonline.

Mixonline reports the organization is led by Christian Amonson, a recording producer and score mixer whose credits include projects with the Chicago Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Pacific Symphony and artists across genres. Amonson told Mixonline that Los Angeles is overdue for a recording orchestra with global presence, an established discography and a reputation for crossing genres.

The ensemble’s first recording session is scheduled at Fox with multiple conductors, Mixonline reports. Projects include a new piece for cellist Tina Guo by composer-in-residence W. Blair Borland, plus arrangements of works by McCartney, Simon and Garfunkel and Howard Shore’s Lord of the Rings themes.

According to Mixonline, the session is supported by equipment and service providers including Digital Audio Denmark, ADK Microphones, LAFCI Music Preparation Services, Women’s Audio Mission and the American Federation of Musicians Local 47. The orchestra uses an open roster and open contracting model, which Mixonline says offers flexibility for bookings and broader community participation.
