Process.Audio has released Overlay, a convolution-based creative plugin that uses files as impulse responses to transform incoming audio with new textures and movement. According to Monthly Mixing, the product is not a sampler and does not play impulse files independently; all output results from convolving the impulse with the input signal.
The plugin consists of four convolution layers, each with an impulse selector, advanced controls and effects. A central XY pad blends the four layers, and an animation panel creates movement. The modulation panel offers up to 10 modulators and four modulation types to control most parameters, with gate and duck functions for shaping input and output signals.
Monthly Mixing reports the company recommends Overlay for beatmakers, sound designers and producers, and said it can add space, depth and movement at the mixing stage. It can also emulate guitar amps, microphones and spaces. The plugin includes curated impulse sounds and community-made presets, and users can load their own samples as impulses.
Overlay is sold as a perpetual license with a regular price of $149 and is currently available for $119 as an introductory offer. A 30-day free trial with full functionality is available. It supports VST3, AU and AAX formats and runs on macOS 10.13 or later with Apple Silicon support and Windows 8.1, 10 and 11 64-bit.
