Pulsar Modular has released R52 Baxandall, a plugin that recreates the tone control circuit Peter Baxandall published in 1952, Monthly Mixing reported. The plugin recreates the negative-feedback tone control circuit with an SP61 pentode placed inside the loop that forms the EQ curve rather than as a saturation stage after the filter.
Monthly Mixing reported that the plugin reflects the published component values, source impedance and amplifier conditions Baxandall specified. BASS and TREBLE operate as two axes of a single feedback network, so adjusting one changes how the other behaves. Raising both pulls the midrange back, and lowering both brings it forward. A SCOPE graph displays this interaction. INPUT controls how much the valve responds, from clean at low levels to added color at higher levels. SOURCE sets input impedance from 0 ohms to 250 kilohms, while LOAD selects amplifier output impedance for a 15-ohm monitor from OFF or 0.7 to 7.0 ohms. SHELF lets users choose between the two treble-handling methods Baxandall published.
R52 Baxandall is available on macOS and Windows in AU, VST3 and AAX formats with no channel-count limit, from mono to immersive, and one valve circuit modeled per channel. It costs $99, and a 30-day trial with all features is available.
