A collection of unauthorized Gibson Custom Shop guitars built in secret from 1988 to 1990 will hit the auction block starting October 20, 2026, according to a report from Premier Guitar. The seven-day sale on ANALOGr.com features the Giffin Outlaw Guitar Collection, crafted by master luthier Roger Giffin and guitar tech Brett Allen after hours at Gibson’s West Coast Custom Shop in Los Angeles.

Premier Guitar reports the instruments were built using Gibson’s Nashville wood stash and parts supply without company approval, including Gibson headstock marks that were not authorized. The collection includes four hollow-body Les Pauls with full internal carving and remote-mounted bridges designed to capture Gretsch-like resonance, two Les Paul baritones, a Goldtop 12-string Les Paul with a custom 12-way intonated bridge, and a three-P90 Les Paul finished in Gretsch gold sparkle.

The auction presents a rare market opportunity for retailers and collectors seeking one-off Custom Shop instruments defined by experimental construction. An invite-only private viewing will be held in Los Angeles on October 24, with limited space available by reservation, according to Premier Guitar.
