Universal Audio has released the UAD Empirical Labs FATSO Tape Simulator as a native plugin, developed in collaboration with Empirical Labs, according to Monthly Mixing.
The plugin ships in two versions. Jr delivers the signature tone of the classic hardware, while Sr adds sidechain filtering, variable transformer saturation and extended Threshold, Attack and Release controls. Both versions share Input drive, Transformer and Warmth controls.
Four compression modes are included. Buss applies a 2:1 ratio with a soft knee for gluing mixes, and G.P. serves as a general-purpose mode maintaining steady levels. Tracking offers an 1176-style mode for vocals and instruments, and Spank functions as a limiter-style mode recreating a 1970s SSL talkback compressor.
The plugin supports VST3, AU and AAX formats and can also run on DSP through Apollo interfaces or UAD Accelerators. It is available at a launch price of $79, with a regular price of $149 afterward.
