Roland has expanded its FP Series digital piano lineup with the new FP-40, marking the manufacturer’s first instrument to include built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. According to MusicRadar, this addition targets developing players by enabling direct network access for the companion Piano Sphere app, which offers personalized lesson plans and real-time feedback. The app was developed in partnership with tuition platform Skoove and functions as a comprehensive ecosystem for tracking progress and accessing song libraries.
MusicRadar reports that the FP-40 sits between the FP-30X and FP-60X models in the current range and introduces the Piano Reality sound engine to the series for the first time. This technology combines sampling with modeling derived from Roland’s high-end GP Series grand pianos to deliver enhanced tonal character and dynamics. The unit also features an upgraded speaker system with dual 12-watt amplifiers arranged in a new internal layout to improve sound clarity and low-end response.
While the FP-40 utilizes the existing PHA-4 Standard keyboard action found in other entry-level models, its Wi-Fi capability allows for automatic firmware updates and future feature enhancements over home networks. MusicRadar states the instrument is available in black or white finishes for $749. This release represents a strategic shift for Roland toward connected instruments that evolve via software, potentially influencing how retailers market digital pianos as long-term learning platforms rather than static hardware.
