Chauvet Professional has published a new Lighting Insights profile of Philip Ealy, the veteran lighting designer whose five-decade career spans Guns N’ Roses’ first tour in 1984, Van Halen’s 2012 reunion tour, and Kenny Chesney productions. The feature, reported by Chauvet Professional, examines how touring lighting technology has evolved from residential floodlights and par cans to automated fixtures, LED systems, and video panels.
Ealy told Chauvet Professional that automated fixtures, LED fixtures, and video panels represent the biggest changes he has witnessed in the industry. He noted that as touring lighting equipment progressed, it became easier to design rigs without concerns about daily load-in and load-out efficiency.
The profile highlights Ealy’s early adoption of automated and color-changing fixtures as well as LED video walls, a practice he continues today. For the 2016 Guns N’ Roses reunion tour, Ealy said the approach was to build large par can looks using current technology, with previz suites allowing real-time cue programming that was not possible in earlier decades.
Ealy also discussed his work on Britney Spears’ Planet Hollywood residency in Las Vegas, programmed by Eric Marchwinski, and the Boys From Oklahoma festival in Stillwater. He said he rarely uses more than two or three colors per song, reflecting an old-school design philosophy. The feature underscores how veteran designers continue to shape touring production as manufacturers advance fixture capabilities.
