Andrew Spencer Goldman of Washington D.C.’s Fulton Lights has named the Boredoms’ 77 BOADRUM performance in Brooklyn, New York on July 7, 2007, as the best gig he has ever seen, Music Connection magazine reported. Goldman described the event as perplexing, mind-blowing and enormously loud, unlike anything he has experienced before or since.

The performance featured 77 drummers arranged in a spiral configuration in a DUMBO park, conducted by Boredoms leader Yamantaka Eye, who wielded what Goldman recalled as a giant trident against a wall of amplified guitar necks. Music Connection reported that participants included non-drummers such as David Grubbs and Alan Licht, who traded guitars for drums for the day. Goldman noted that Thrill Jockey released a DVD of the performance, though he said recordings cannot convey the sheer magnitude of the live event.

Goldman remembered standing next to Lightning Bolt’s Brian Chippendale as he pummeled his kit, feeling like his mind was being cracked open by the sum total of what was happening. He described the vibe as less performance and more ancient ritual, 77 minutes of pure ecstatic noise. Fulton Lights’s album Best World is out November 6.
