MakeMusic has introduced correlated sight reading templates in Sight Reading Studio. These are prebuilt templates, found in the MakeMusic library and aligned lesson by lesson with three methods: Habits of a Successful Musician, Book 1 from GIA Publications; Sound Innovations, Book 1 from Alfred Music; and Sing at First Sight by Andy Beck.
The templates turn method books into a supply of fresh sight reading. Teachers choose the template that matches where students are in the book and generate a brand-new exercise built around the skills from that lesson. Generating again supplies another exercise without writing notation or hunting for leveled material.
In the classroom, teachers can project an exercise for the full ensemble at the top of rehearsal, adjust the tempo, play a starting pitch or toggle the accompaniment. A cold-read, warm-read routine lets students read an exercise, talk through what tripped them up, then tackle a fresh exercise at the same level to apply the fix.
Templates can reinforce a lesson on dotted quarter notes in Sound Innovations or a new interval in Sing at First Sight. Several new exercises in a row provide practice for the sight reading room.
Teachers can assign a template through MakeMusic Cloud. When students record, they see where they went sharp, flat or off the beat. Students who need reinforcement can receive an earlier lesson’s template, while advanced players receive a later one.
