Thephonoloop has released Outlines, a virtual instrument for Native Instruments’ Kontakt Player that combines acoustic recordings, tape loops and sounds processed with modular systems. The NKS-ready library contains 2,509 samples and 438 presets.
The instrument has two independent layers that can use animated granular playback or conventional polyphonic playback. Users can combine two layers of either type or use one of each. Five instrument modes, Duets, Lengths, Orbits, Sculpt and Singular, provide different starting points for working with the sounds.
Each layer has a 16-step polyphonic sequencer that can also modify individual voices. Sequencer functions include changing sample start positions, detuning, reversing notes, shifting selected steps by an octave and switching sound sources. Four patterns can be stored in each sequencer and changed or modulated during performance.
Source recordings include flutes, mallet instruments, strings, synthesizers, tape loops and environmental textures. Thephonoloop used conventional, ultrasonic and contact microphones in developing the library.
Outlines requires Kontakt Player 7.10.7 or later and has a 7.81 GB compressed download size. The announced introductory price was 90 euros excluding VAT, followed by a regular price of 120 euros excluding VAT. The release lists support for macOS 12 through 15 and Windows 10 or 11.
