Muse Group has officially launched Audacity 4, delivering what the company describes as the most significant update in the free, open-source audio editor’s 26-year history. According to reporting from MusicRadar, this release aims to modernize the software’s architecture while retaining the simplicity that has driven hundreds of millions of downloads since its 2000 debut.
MusicRadar reports that the update fundamentally overhauls the editing workflow by introducing non-destructive clip trimming, overlapping clips on the timeline, and new grouping capabilities. The interface now features a dedicated home screen and customizable workspaces, though users can revert to the classic layout. Enhanced metering includes individual track level monitors and vertical orientation options for main playback.
The release also expands compatibility for the professional audio sector by supporting a broader range of third-party VST3, AU, and LV2 effects. Julia Sazhina, Chief Product Officer at Muse Group, stated via press release that the goal was to prepare the iconic editor for the next 25 years by enabling intelligent tools and connected workflows without altering its core appeal. Audacity 4 is immediately available for macOS, Windows, and Linux systems through the MuseHub platform.
