NS Design has described the development of Ned Steinberger’s FIN guitars and basses in its Tales from the Shop series. The account connects the new instruments with Steinberger’s earlier work designing electric basses with Stuart Spector.

According to the company, the FIN project took shape over eight or nine years as Steinberger reconsidered how his headless guitars and basses could be built with current materials and design methods.

The process included carving designs from wood, developing computer models, running computer-aided design simulations and identifying balance points. Steinberger also put prototypes into players’ hands to obtain feedback before continuing the search for materials.

The company’s account shows Steinberger with a FIN guitar made from carbon-fiber composite. It presents the instruments as part of a continuing design approach in which new technology serves the instrument’s musical function and visual form.
