Steinberg has surprise-released Cubase 16, the latest version of its flagship DAW, with new instruments, effects and workflow refinements aimed at making music production faster and more intuitive, according to a MusicTech report.

The update arrives in the same three tiers existing users recognize — Pro, Artist and Elements — and is available now through the Steinberg Online Shop and from retailers. Pricing details for each tier were not specified in the MusicTech report.

Headlining the release is Instrument Stacks, which lets users create custom layered sounds by combining multiple VST instruments, Sampler Tracks and Drum Tracks into a single playable instrument with flexible per-layer controls. Cubase 16 also adds Omnivocal Basic, powered by Yamaha’s latest NX vocal synthesis engine, offering realistic singing voices with two voicebanks directly within the DAW.

New processing tools include DrumChain, a multi-effects processor designed specifically for drums, and VocalTouch, a plugin for polished vocal sounds. The update brings a Module FM library with over 200 presets and five new sample packs: Afro House, Beats & Breaks, K-Pop, Latin Vibes and Organic Sessions. Integration with Waves’ Illugen AI sample generator has also been upgraded.

Workflow improvements include a redesigned searchable Settings area, stem separation expanded to six stems, improved tempo detection, extended ASIO-Guard pre-processing buffer, a new Quick Help system, expanded MIDI 2.0 support, doubled audio sends per channel from eight to 16, and Ableton Link support. Steinberg is offering a free grace period update to Cubase 16 for users who purchased Cubase 15 since October 7, with upgrades, crossgrades and educational versions also available.
