German production company Bildquadrat has expanded its Riedel Communications intercom system with Virtual SmartPanel software.

The Düsseldorf company uses the software to connect participants through smartphones, tablets, desktop computers and web browsers. The approach extends communications beyond the coverage area of a local wireless intercom system.

Bildquadrat also upgraded its earlier Artist frames to an Artist-1024 IP system. The installation uses STAGE servers in Düsseldorf and a dashboard for remote monitoring and control.

The company’s Cologne Pride production provides an example of the setup in use. Mobile reporters and camera crews could remain connected with production teams as they worked across the event area, rather than depending entirely on local radio coverage.

Managing director Niklas Windeck and head of broadcast production Dominic Zürn described the expansion in the original release. The software-based approach allows additional participants to join an established production communications system without requiring a dedicated physical panel at every location.
