Muse Group has released Audacity 4, a new version of the open-source audio editing software. Monthly Mixing reported that this update redesigns the editing workflow and overhauls the interface. Existing keyboard shortcuts remain unchanged, and projects created in Audacity 3 open normally. The main improvement is increased editing freedom through the introduction of clip-based editing. Recording can now start anywhere on the timeline without shifting other clips. The Sync-Lock feature that previously prevented such conflicts has been replaced with ripple editing shortcuts used only when needed, making editing more flexible.
In addition, the Workspaces feature lets users save their preferred toolbar arrangement and screen layout and recall it when needed, enabling a personalized working environment. Internally, the software has been rebuilt on the Qt framework instead of wxWidgets, and the project file format has accordingly changed to .aup4. Existing .aup3 files can still be opened and converted. Julia Sazhina, chief product officer at Muse Group, stated that Audacity has been helping creators record and edit audio for more than 25 years. She noted the goal with version 4 was to prepare it for the next 25 years. Audacity 4 remains free and open source, as before.
