Steinberg has released Cubase 16, the newest version of its digital audio workstation. Monthly Mixing reported that the update introduces Instrument Stacks, allowing users to combine multiple VST instruments, Sampler Tracks and Drum Tracks into one playable instrument, with each layer controlled individually.
The publication also reported that Cubase 16 includes OmniVocal Basic, which is built on Yamaha’s NX vocal synthesis engine and ships with two voicebanks. Users can enter and edit lyrics alongside MIDI notes in the Key Editor. Stem separation now covers six stems: vocals, drums, bass, piano, guitar and other instruments.
Additional features include DrumChain, a multi-effects processor for drums, and VocalTouch, a plugin for refining vocal sounds. The Module FM library contains more than 200 presets, and five sample packs are bundled: Afro House, Beats and Breaks, K-Pop, Latin Vibes and Organic Sessions. Integration with Waves’ AI sample generator Illugen has also been improved.
The Key Editor now offers a Strum function for natural chord timing variations and a Stretch Selection tool for compressing or stretching MIDI sections. Audio sends per channel have increased from eight to 16, MIDI 2.0 support has been expanded, and Ableton Link is supported. Cubase Pro 16 is priced at $599.99, Artist 16 at $299.99 and Elements 16 at $99.99. Users who bought Cubase 15 on or after October 7 can update at no cost.
