London’s Royal Albert Hall has upgraded its house sound system with cardioid loudspeaker technology from d&b audiotechnik, installing more than 140 new loudspeaker elements across the 5,272-capacity auditorium. According to MONDO-DR, the system centers on KSL, XSL and CCL arrays chosen for their inherent cardioid characteristics and directivity control.

The main left and right hangs are 12-deep KSL, with XSL arrays handling out-fills, choir positions and two new central hangs for Soundscape use, MONDO-DR reports. CCL arrays serve as circle delays, while 42S speakers replace the previous 16C column speakers as front-fills. Low-end reinforcement comes from a reconfigured central hang of SL-SUBs and new XSL-SUBs on the ground.

The system is driven by new 40D install amplifiers powering left, center, right and Soundscape hangs, with new D90 amplifiers for flown subs and existing D80, 30D, 10D and 5D units retained elsewhere. MONDO-DR reports the upgrade followed a market comparison against alternative manufacturers, with d&b retaining most 2018 infrastructure positions and adding equipment only where coverage improved.

Permanent flown XSL hangs now support Soundscape without additional rental gear, and processor capacity expanded from two DS100 units to three DS110 units including redundancy, the publication reports.
