MOTU has begun shipping its new OctaLite USB audio interface, a device described as unique for its combination of features and portability. According to marketing director Jim Cooper, the OctaLite is the sole audio interface currently available that provides eight microphone preamps within a small, half-rack enclosure.

The interface connects to computers through a high-speed USB-C 2.0 port, which is compatible with both USB 3 and 4, as well as iOS devices. It supports low-latency operation at 2 milliseconds round trip time and accommodates sample rates up to 192 kHz. The OctaLite features eight combo XLR/TRS inputs – two on the front and six on the rear – designed for microphones, line signals, and high-impedance guitars.

Each microphone input offers individual phantom power, a pad option, phase inversion, and a switch to send either dry or DSP-processed signals to a digital audio workstation. The device also incorporates 32-bit ESS PRO SABRE DAC technology and preamps from Texas Instruments, delivering a dynamic range of 125 dB and a gain of +74 dB. Users can also use the interface as an optical expander to convert eight microphone inputs to eight channels of ADAT optical digital output.
