Splice has released John Legend: Electric Piano, a new preset pack for its Splice INSTRUMENT plugin built from fresh recordings of the vintage electric piano in the artist’s Los Angeles home studio, according to a report from We Rave You.

The pack, released Oct. 27, marks Legend’s second instrument with Splice following the piano behind his 2004 hit “Ordinary People,” which the company says tens of thousands of musicians have played. The new release includes five presets: Electric Piano, Direct, Direct Real, Plate and Room, with the Direct options offering dry keys and Plate and Room adding space.

Splice CEO Kakul Srivastava described the release as more personal than the first, noting the instrument is one Legend lives with and creates on in his own home. The pack joins Splice’s Artist Signature line alongside releases with composer Philip Glass and drummer Abe Laboriel.

The Splice INSTRUMENT plugin is free, but the pack requires an INSTRUMENT, Creator or Creator+ plan. The INSTRUMENT plan costs $12.99 per month with a 14-day free trial, and the plugin runs as VST, AU and AAX. Legend noted that widely available technology alone won’t differentiate an artist’s music, emphasizing that what sets work apart is what the musician brings to it.
